Where we are
Hataitai is one of Wellington's inner suburbs, just east of the CBD on the other side of Mount Victoria.
If you're intending to visit It's easily accessible by bus or by car from the CBD, and it's just off the main route to the Wellington International Airport.
The suburb we now know as Hataitai got its name in 1901, when the Hataitai Land Company was formed to sell parcels of land for development. It's was from that point that the suburb really started to take off, and it grew rapidly for the first half of the twentieth century.
The opening of the Hataitai bus tunnel in 1907, and the Mount Vic tunnel in 1931, were important steps in helping the area to grow.
