Cycle Aware Wellington is working with the Council to reduce conflict on the Mt Vic tunnel shared path.
"Some people whiz through on bikes without considering others' needs", says CAW volunteer Patrick Morgan.
"This is unacceptable and we are keen to improve behaviour."
He says the Council doesn't have a record of crashes but gets regular complaints. At just 1.4m wide the path doesn't meet guidelines for shared paths.
The best fix would be separation but this isn't possible in the existing tunnel.
CAW will run a campaign in March, using the Friendly Cyclist theme. It will include signage, leaflets, publicity and volunteers talking with tunnel users about the issues.
The key messages are:
“Cyclists: slow down to pass.”
“Cyclists: use a bell or call out.”
“Cyclists: use your manners.”
“Be prepared to let people pass.”
Volunteers at first Evans Bay rubbish collection.
Meet at the big orange wind needle on the corner of Evans Bay and Cobham Drive, Friday 14 March at 10am. Email glendajanelewis@gmail.com to register your interest, and she will let you know subsequent dates and times. They will also be posted on the website http://hataitai.org.nz/
Each collection is for no longer than an hour. Bags and gloves supplied and the Council pick up the bags. Nine people turned up to our first collection on 14 Feb! It’s a great way to get to know people in our neighbourhood. Thanks Zandra, Don, David, Roger, Roz, Helen, Clive and Jenny.
A reminder:
If you’ve forgotten what can and cannot be recycled, go to http://wellington.govt.nz/services/environment-and-waste/rubbish-and-recycling/recycling
And please don’t put your rubbish and recycling out too far in advance of collection. It blows everywhere and dogs get into the bags.
Glenda Lewis is organising a group to collect rubbish from Evans Bay. The official kick off is in March, but there is an initial collection this Friday (14th) at 10:00. Meet at the Zephyrometer on the corner of Evans Bay Parade and Cobham Drive. Alternatively, email Glenda (glendajanelewis@gmail.com) to see how you can get involved.
