Wellington Road Upgrade starts Sunday 28 February

A multi-agency upgrade of State Highway 1 Wellington Road in Wellington City – the short section of road between Ruahine Street and Kilbirnie Crescent – will start this Sunday 28 February 2021.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Wellington City Council and Wellington Water are coordinating a project to upgrade water pipes, footpaths and road surfaces during a 7-week period.

  • Allow extra time as the lanes here will be altered to allow work to take place on the side of the road during the daytime

  • Both north and southbound traffic will each have a lane to use at a 30km/h speed limit day and night.

  • On 4 nights, at the final stages of the project, a detour for southbound traffic only will be required after 9pm, starting just after the Mt Victoria Tunnel, turning left into Taurima St, Moxham Ave, Kupe St and Hamilton Rd to the Kilbirnie Cres traffic lights. Road resurfacing will occur during this period.

  • Expect brief stop/go traffic control on 2 nights, 28 Feb and 8 Mar (on or about) while the altered lane layout is marked out.

If you have any questions or would like to send us your feedback on this project, please message Project Coordinator Gareth Howie on email WellingtonRoad@nzta.govt.nz or phone 0800 44 44 49.

Thank you for your patience while the work is underway. Well maintained roads and services are assets for the wider community as well as for the safety and comfort of road users.
